There are children's playgrounds in every district in Hong Kong. Not only providing children a recreational space, can it help to develop physical and mental health of children and the ability of self-challenging. The old-style of playground's facilities such as long metal slide and climbing frames were excited for children to play. The renewed playground's facilities are more beauty and colourful. However, it becomes less excitement and interaction while it just mainly foucs on safety and management issue.
The long slide at Hong Kong Park on Admiralty had been demolished. It caused many noises from parents and organizations. It is time for us to reflect on the quality of the children's playgrounds. After the renewal of the facilities, can it still satisfy the needs of children's development? How to balance the safety issue and the exciting facilities?
Fight for our children
Emily Au is a member of a group called "Give us back the long slide of HK Park". She is the parents of two girls and always bring her daughters to Hong Kong Park to play with the long slide. Unfortunately, the long slide was demolished by Leisure and Culture Services Department in this March. She wanted the department to respond their questions such as when will the new slide reconstruct there and how will the empty space use.
The president of Playright, Mrs. Wong, said that there are 3 aspects of a children's playground that have to been achieved which are the safety, accessibility and diversity. She thinks the designers are designed from a adult's viewpoint instead of a child. The safety guidelines is not the same with design guidelines. Design guidelines helps the designers to jump out from the box instead of only follow the safety guidelines when thinking of the design of children's playground. The Leisure and Culture Services Department can learn from other countries' design guidelines to make good improvement of the Hong Kong children's playgrounds.
